{"created":"2023-06-20T13:24:09.880139+00:00","id":5542,"links":{},"metadata":{"_buckets":{"deposit":"d073b3d8-aecb-44ff-89c3-9b1b20e68f1e"},"_deposit":{"created_by":24,"id":"5542","owners":[24],"pid":{"revision_id":0,"type":"depid","value":"5542"},"status":"published"},"_oai":{"id":"oai:ir.soken.ac.jp:00005542","sets":["28:43:486"]},"author_link":["6977","6975","6976"],"item_10002_biblio_info_7":{"attribute_name":"書誌情報","attribute_value_mlt":[{"bibliographicIssueDates":{"bibliographicIssueDate":"2017-03-31","bibliographicIssueDateType":"Issued"},"bibliographicIssueNumber":"13","bibliographicPageEnd":"264","bibliographicPageStart":"257","bibliographic_titles":[{"bibliographic_title":"総研大文化科学研究"},{"bibliographic_title":"Sokendai Review of Cultural and Social Studies","bibliographic_titleLang":"en"}]}]},"item_10002_creator_23":{"attribute_name":"フリガナ","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"ミナミ, ナオコ","creatorNameLang":"ja-Kana"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]}]},"item_10002_description_19":{"attribute_name":"フォーマット","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"application/pdf","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_10002_description_5":{"attribute_name":"抄録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"本稿は、太平洋問題調査会（Institute of Pacific Relations, 略称IPR）の調査・研究機関としての側面に注目し、アメリカにおける日本研究の発展に果たした役割について考察するものである。\n\nIPRは、1925年にハワイで設立され、1961年までその活動を続けた民間の学術団体である。「太平洋諸國民ノ相互關係改善ノ為メ其事情ヲ研究スルコト」を目的として発足、アメリカに本部を、日本を含む各国に支部を置き、2～3年に一度、「太平洋会議」とよばれる会議を開催したほか、定期的に太平洋地域の調査・研究をおこなっていた。1995年に出版された資料によれば、IPRの出版物は、機関誌を含め約1,600冊に上る。そのような出版規模をもつ団体であるにもかかわらず、アメリカのマッカーシズムによって解散を余儀なくされたため、研究が避けられていた時代もあった。1990年代以降、研究が進んできたものの、太平洋会議を中心に、国際関係論や外交史の視点からその活動を論じた先行研究がほとんどである。しかしながら、IPRでは会議と同様、太平洋地域の調査・研究にも力を入れていた。\n\nアメリカで広く「日本研究」がおこなわれるようになった直接の契機となったのが、太平洋戦争であり、戦後、地域研究の一側面として発展してきたことは知られている。そのような日本研究がまだ盛んでなかった1920年代から、IPRはすでに日本をその研究対象としていた。1930年前後には、2度にわたり、日本研究をアメリカで拡大させるための調査をおこない、具体的なプログラムも実施していた。戦後、外国人による日本論として広く読まれた、E・ハーバート・ノーマン『日本における近代国家の成立』や、ジョージ・B・サンソム『西欧世界と日本』の成立にも、IPRが関係している。\n\nIPRは、①学術的日本研究をおこなった先駆的な機関であり、②全米の大学・機関における日本研究の動向を、初めて調査した機関でもあった。民間団体として調査・研究をおこなうというIPRの当初の目的は、時代とともに変化せざるを得なかった。だが、様々な日本関係書をのこしたその活動は、アメリカの日本研究において、先駆的な存在であったといえるだろう。\n\nThe Institute of Pacific Relations (IPR) was founded as a non-governmental academic organization in Honolulu in 1925. Attempting to improve relations among the countries in the Pacific Rim, it held international conferences every two or three years. It published numerous reports concerning diverse issues such as immigration, religion, and politics. In 1961, the institute was forced into dissolution under the strong influence of McCarthyism, and little attention was paid to it thereafter.\n\nIn 1993, the first international conference was held to reexamine and reevaluate the IPR. Consequently, many scholars became interested and involved, and began investigating issues related to the IPR. The majority of them, however, tended to focus mainly on the IPR conferences restricting the significance apportioned to the IPR to the fields of foreign policy and international relations.\n\nThis paper contends that the IPR had another key area of significance as well, arguing that even in the 1920s, the IPR played an indispensable role as a research institute. At the time, Japanese Studies was not a popular field of study in North America, and this state of affairs lasted until the outbreak of the Pacific War when, in order to understand their enemy nation, the US government began encouraging study of the subject. Prior to the war, the IPR had already published many books on Japan, and these amounted to 130 by the end of the war. Naturally, much of the research already conducted by the IPR was utilized when the US-led GHQ occupied a defeated Japan.\n\nIt should be noted, however, that the IPR was already engaged in promoting Japanese Studies well before the war, and thus contributing to the development of the discipline. For example, the organization was already conducting research on Japan at various universities, colleges, and other institutions in the late 1920s. Scholars of Japanese Studies such as E. H. Norman and G. B. Sansom were involved in this research, and it is worth remembering that influential books of theirs, such as Norman’s Japan’s Emergence as a Modern State and Sansom’s The Western World and Japan, were first published by the IPR.
