To date, however, quantitative studies on intragroup affiliative behaviours in social carnivores have been\nlimited. Here, we investigated the social functions of the two most commonly observed affiliative behaviours in captive\nAfrican lions (Panthera leo): head rubbing and licking. We conducted behavioural observations on a captive group of lions\ncomposed of 7 males and 14 females, and tested hypotheses regarding three social functions: tension reduction, social\nbonding, and social status expression. Disproportionately frequent male–male and female-to-male head rubbing was\nobserved, while more than 95% of all licking interactions occurred in female–female dyads. In accordance with the social\nbond hypothesis, and in disagreement with the social status expression hypothesis, both head rubbing and licking\ninteractions were reciprocal. After controlling for spatial association, the dyadic frequency of head rubbing was negatively\ncorrelated with age difference while licking was positively correlated with relatedness. Group reunion after daily separation\ndid not affect the frequencies of the affiliative behaviours, which was in disagreement with the predictions from the tension\nreduction hypothesis. These results support the social bond hypothesis for the functions of head rubbing and licking.\nDifferent patterns of affiliative behaviour between the sexes may reflect differences in the relationship quality in each sex or\nthe differential predisposition to licking due to its original function in offspring care.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_10001_publisher_8":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"Public Library of Science"}]},"item_10001_relation_14":{"attribute_name":"DOI","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_relation_name":[{"subitem_relation_name_text":"10.1371/journal.pone.0073044"}],"subitem_relation_type":"isIdenticalTo","subitem_relation_type_id":{"subitem_relation_type_id_text":"http://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0073044","subitem_relation_type_select":"DOI"}}]},"item_10001_rights_15":{"attribute_name":"権利","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_rights":"@Kutsukake et al."}]},"item_10001_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"19326203","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_10001_version_type_20":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"KUTSUKAKE, Nobuyuki"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"HASEGAWA, Toshikazu"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"MATOBA, Tomoyuki"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2019-12-05"}],"displaytype":"simple","filename":"KN2013.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"2.6 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_11","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"fetchObject","url":"https://ir.soken.ac.jp/record/6038/files/KN2013.pdf"},"version_id":"65ac8003-8b0e-45a8-a8f6-670bbb390e3f"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"journal article","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"Head Rubbing and Licking Reinforce Social Bonds in a Group of Captive African Lions, Panthera leo","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"Head Rubbing and Licking Reinforce Social Bonds in a Group of Captive African Lions, Panthera leo"},{"subitem_title":"Head Rubbing and Licking Reinforce Social Bonds in a Group of Captive African Lions, Panthera leo","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"10001","owner":"24","path":["115","277"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2019-12-05"},"publish_date":"2019-12-05","publish_status":"0","recid":"6038","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["Head Rubbing and Licking Reinforce Social Bonds in a Group of Captive African Lions, Panthera leo"],"weko_creator_id":"24","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-06-20T14:16:42.003820+00:00"}
